Gordie's Review (20 months old) – Trains! Trains !
Cost: Free
Supervision: None.
Age Range: Toddler-primary grades.
Surface: Industrial flooring.
Footwear: shoes.
Safety Features/Concerns: You need to stay close to monitor your children as it is a wide, open area. Children could easily slip out and be hidden behind bookcases if you aren’t paying attention.
Play Area Features: (Can change with the toys that are in stock and by location). Includes things like: Thomas the Train Engine train table; doll house; riding toys; shopping cart; tea cup shaped reading area and of course – books!
Overall Assessment: This is a great place for kids to engage in some quiet time activities. We went to the Indigo location at CrossIron Mills but each location has a similar set up with similar items. As I get more information about the individual locations I’ll add that below. We’ve just started taking Gordie to play at chapters - it’s not really set up for babies. Right now, when we are at CrossIron Mills, he would rather go play with the trains in Indigo than run around in the mall’s Dinosaur play area. This particular location has a pretty big play area, with lots of different activities. I have to say though, even though it’s free, it ends up being a lot more expensive than most free play areas as I often end up walking out with a book for me or Gordie.
Activities by location:
Chapters – Chinook: Train table; ride on toys (Plasma Car); puppets.
Chapters - Dalhousie Station: Train table; doll house; child sized table and chairs; ride on toys (Plasma Car); shopping cart.
Indigo - Crossiron Mills: Train table; doll house; child sized table and chairs; ride on toys (Plasma Car); shopping cart, teacup reading area.
Chapters - Spectrum (Sunridge): Train table with child sized table and chairs nearby as well as 3 adult chairs. Around the corner there is a teacup reading area, kitchen and ride on toys (Plasma Car). The play area is pretty spread out. You can’t really supervise the whole area at once.

My kids choose this over the play area at Crossiron mills the last time we were there!
ReplyDeleteWe also love storytime at Signal Hill. The kids play with the trains while listening to stories!
ReplyDeleteon this is a nice play for my kids, We visit that place many times, my kids really love that place they really enjoyed and have a great time..
ReplyDeleteToddler Table and Chair Set
It's nice to watch the kids playing and enjoying in this play area with lots of toys and reading books
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't really call this a play place. A group of girlfriends (with thier preschoolers) would meet once a week at the 130th location and were asked to stop coming as they didn't always buy something everytime. The staff complianed to the moms that it wasn't a library and that Tommy K was next door. :/
ReplyDeleteBeing a mother of 3 kids i know that it is crucial to occupy kids with some activity while they are listening to stories. Trains are a perfect way out. Great!
ReplyDeleteMama3Boys: I think the staff are in the right for kicking those women out. It is not a free public playground, it is a place of business that kindly offers simple amusements for its youngest customers whilst mom and dad shop. If you went into any other store to loiter for a lengthy time every week I'd be surprised if you didn't get a restraining order!
